LoRaWAN vs 4G vs Wi-Fi: Choosing the Right Connectivity for Industrial IoT

Every industrial IoT project eventually runs into the same question: how do the devices actually talk to each other and to the cloud? The answer is rarely a single technology. Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN and 4G each win in different situations, and choosing wrong means either paying too much or getting coverage that does not reach.
Here is how we think about it when planning a deployment.
Wi-Fi: high bandwidth inside a controlled space
Industrial Wi-Fi is the right choice when your devices sit inside a building or campus you control, and when they need to move real data — camera feeds, machine telemetry, firmware updates. The trade-off is range and infrastructure: Wi-Fi needs access points, cabling and power, and its signal does not travel far through thick walls or across a large yard.
Use Wi-Fi when: the site is indoors or tightly bounded, mains power is available, and bandwidth matters more than distance. A factory floor, a warehouse, or a smart building are classic cases. This is exactly the role the MK EDGE W100 industrial Wi-Fi gateway is built for.
LoRaWAN: long range, tiny power, small data
LoRaWAN flips the priorities. It sends very small packets over very long distances — kilometres in open conditions — while sipping so little power that sensors can run for years on a battery. What it cannot do is move large amounts of data. You would never stream video over LoRaWAN, but it is perfect for readings like temperature, level, vibration, energy use and location.

4G: connectivity where there is no fixed network
4G is the answer when a site has no fixed infrastructure at all, or when a device moves. It gives you real bandwidth over a cellular network you do not have to build, with the option of dual-SIM failover so a site stays online even if one carrier drops.

The important insight is that these are not competitors — they are layers. A single industrial site often uses LoRaWAN for its scattered battery sensors, Wi-Fi for its high-bandwidth cameras and machines, and 4G as a backhaul or failover link to the cloud. A simple way to decide
Ask three questions about each group of devices. How far do they need to reach? How much power is available? How much data do they send?
